Style Series: Skatecore

Ever wonder why Sk8ter was and is so cool? Well, you're about to find out. Let's roll right into this one, shall we?

Let's go right back to the 1940s where surfers wanted something to do when the waves were flat and the tides were low. Well, their idea of fun was “sidewalk surfing” which went on to be so popular and later came to be known as skateboarding. That's where we can start with the mini skirts and the comfortable clothing for ease in moving around on this plank of wood on wheels.

Skater or skatecore had its humble beginnings here but it has grown and evolved ever since.

Originally it was a genre of hardcore punk that closely associated itself with the skate culture but then changed into the more melodic genre of punk rock through the 1990s.

Their style staples are :

  • Shorts
  • Flat Bottomed Shoes
  • Dad Cap
  • Tall socks
  • T-shirts
  • Baggy Trousers - Chinos or Cargos
  • Jeans

Let's look at some subgenres of the skatecore as well-

Cursed Skater

A variation of your skater aesthetic with a hint of bastard core which is an aesthetic that people would describe as offensive or cursed by nature.

They tend to wear t-shirts that have some obscure or weird messages on them as well, cursed if you want to call it.

Skater Girl

It varies in style but the Skater Girl has some staples. With its baggy pants to always show for, this also includes

  • Loose jeans (straight-leg, mom, etc.)
  • Flat-bottomed shoes
  • Baggy shirts
  • Layering long sleeves and oversized shirts

Women also substitute some of these items with shorts and tank tops.

Soft Skater Girl

This incorporates more feminine silhouettes and bright colours which is an absolute contrast to the otherwise muted colours.

Clothing item such as

  • Skater skirts
  • Jean shorts
  • Loose jeans
  • Tank tops or t-shirts
  • Tall socks
  • Cute backpacks/bum bags
  • Canvas Sneakers

Are all a part of the soft skater girl aesthetic

As we dig deeper we find that each sub-genre has something similar in terms the clothing items, though the origins may be skateboard related we see different people adopt this style and aesthetic as it has a certain edge to it which helps in one's self-expression.

Yours

Neeve
