Style Series: Cottagecore

 Here's an aesthetic that has been inspired by a romantic interpretation of rural life. If you are obsessed with mushroom figurines, flower print, straw hats, and tiny enviable stone houses in a field of wildflowers then this is the aesthetic for you. 

Today we frolic our way right into Cottagecore.

So what exactly is Cottage core? Well if you’ve romanticized living a very simple western rural life this is sort of the aesthetic that you should get into. 

Cottagecore/ Farmcore/Normcore is centered around what you would imagine living in a cottage in the countryside would be like — gardening, greenery, floral prints, flowy dresses, and animals

Those who follow this aesthetic are taken up by tradition but they do not trade their modern life for it completely 

Although the cottage core aesthetic isn’t new, it was popularised by the queer teens on TikTok as they begin to fantasize about this simple farm life during the pandemic.

It is a more dressed up look rather than laid back, with a very feminine touch. It also is very easy going and includes many flowy silhouettes and softer cotton or linen materials. 

You’ll find ruching, ruffles, tiers, smocking, and embroidery. And the print on these materials is very distinct, you tend to see florals, gingham, and plaid.

The pastel colors are a very distinct part of the cottage core aesthetic. Colors like eggshell, blush, lemonade, periwinkle, pistachio, lavender, and cornflower blue.

The outfits mainly include these items 

• Longer, loose-fitting, flowy dresses and skirts
• Large layered clothing with big pockets, puffy sleeves, and button blouses 
• Sundresses.
• Embroidered plants, animals, and insects.
• Shortalls/overalls.
• Lace.
• Dungarees
• Fisherman Pullover
• Empire waist Skirt 

We also see hand-crafted accessories such as simple jewelry, knitted hats, socks, and outerwear.

Under cottage core, we also find different subgenres like Blooomcore, Cottagegore, Honeycore which all have very slight variations to the main cottage core aesthetic.

This aesthetic allows more expression of the feminine side with the different prints and colors, there is barely any dark aspect to it, the dark aspect is mainly covered in the Cottagegore aesthetic that covers all the negative or dark aspects of cottage core. I personally love the soft colors and flowy materials that come with this aesthetic, nothing screams comfort and style more than this one.
