Colour Blocking
Wearing multiple bright colours together with different hues, sounds a bit daunting doesn't it? Almost as if it's something that can't be pulled off. Well, needless to say, it's quite the opposite.
So today I'll tell you why by talking about this phenomenon that is known as Color Blocking!
So what is Colour blocking?
As I mentioned, Colour Blocking is the method of wearing different bright colours or two hues of the same colour family together. The entire outfit targets a palette of two or more colours usually in bold and eye-popping shades. In colour blocking, you don't use prints and patterns that take away from the visual of it being “blocked”.
History of Colour Blocking
So where did it all start from? Way back in 1946 with Yves St.Laurent launching a dress based after the famous paintings of Dutch painter Piet Mondrian. This dress debuted in the Yves St.Laurent fall/winter fashion show. But at the time it was not readily accepted and was merely viewed as a work of art rather than a wearable piece. It showcased blue, yellow and red squares with bold black lines.
How to Colour Block
I'm sure that knowing about these concepts makes us want to try to put them to use as well. The process of doing it is as simple and effortless as it sounds. Adding solid colours together in one outfit, doesn't sound that hard, does it?The simple rule to follow is that of the colour wheel, the colours are located near each other on the basis of their natural transition from one to the other. Let's take for example red; it looks best with pink and orange; yellow looks good with light green and mustard. Similarly, turquoise goes well with blues and greens.
You don't have to start with the big and bright colours. Choosing colours according to hues that compliment each other, like red and pink as i mentioned earlier, purple and lilac, a lighter shade of blue with dark blue are always good go to combinations
Colour blocking is more of a concept than a mere trend and will never go out of style. To be honest, I'm sure all of you must be thinking that you must have done this at some time or the other and only now know there's an actual name to it. Colour blocking is probably one of the simplest ways to explore and add more colour to your wardrobe. Personally I love doing it and I highly encourage everyone to try it out more often.
